5 DIY Methods for Clearing a Clogged Drain

A clogged drain can quickly turn a good day into a bad one. Luckily, there are some simple, yet effective, ways you can clear a clogged drain in your home.

Before you grab the phone and make a call to your local plumber, try these five DIY clogged drain cleaning tips. They might just save you time and not require you to schedule an appointment with a plumbing company.

Use a Simple Wire Hanger

Who knew that a wire hanger could be used to unclog drains? This method is extremely effective when trying to remove hair clogs. All you do is take a wire coat hanger, straighten it out and make the end a hook. Take the hook, push it down the drain, wiggle it around a little, and you should catch the clog. Once it is caught, you can pull it out.

Boiling Water

This drain cleaning method really is as easy as it sounds. Just boil some water and slowly pour it down the drain.

Salt and Baking Soda

A mixture of a ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of salt creates a drain cleaning solution that is very effective. Create this mixture, pour it down the drain, and then let it sit for about 20 minutes. When the timer sounds, pour water down the drain and the clog should magically disappear.

The Drain Snake

A drain snake is a common tool used by a plumber when you have a clogged drain. It is similar to the coat hanger, but the difference is it is more flexible and there is a spiral at the end. A drain snake can be purchased at a plumbing supply store.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you don’t have any salt on hand, you can create a drain cleaning solution with 1/3 cup vinegar and 1/3 cup baking soda. Pour the solution down the clogged drain, let it fizz up a little, then rinse it out with hot water.

Sometimes even trying these DIY methods isn’t enough to unclog your drain. Call General Plumbing, your local plumbing company, and let us handle those stubbornly clogged drains.
