It’s unfortunate but true — sometimes, when your commercial water heater is functioning, minerals naturally build up at the bottom of your unit. Then, if you don’t clean out your water heater, the debris that has built up can become a real issue! Over time, if left unchecked, free-floating sediment can reduce your heater’s efficiency, and leave you with a costly repair bill.
So, what can you do to combat this? Be diligent about cleaning out your water heater! Here’s how to do just that:
Cleaning Out Your Water Heater: the Basics
- Depending on the type of water heater you have, turn off the electricity connected to your heater, or turn your gas to the lowest setting possible.
- Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of your water heater tank, then run the hose to a good drainage spot.
- Next, it’s time to open the drain valve on your water heater! Turn the hot water on in one or more faucets in your home; keep the water running until there is no more water coming out of the end of your hose.
- Relight the pilot.
- Remove the hose and reattach the water line. Close the drain valve.
- Contact a professional for assistance, if needed!
