How to Clean Out a Clogged Drain Pipe

Are you experiencing a clogged drain pipe? Hey, here’s the thing: it happens! All plumbing systems, no matter what, WILL incur a clog or two from time to time. This is just the nature of the beast! Luckily, though, there are a few tried-and-true ways to clean out your clogged drain pipe(s), when clogs occur. Follow our mini-guide below!

  • Use boiling water to flush out your drain. This is often an easy fix, for simple drain clogs. Heat up a substantial amount of water in a kettle, and pour it directly into your drain. If your drain is experiencing a simple clog, this can often be a great (and easy!) way to clean things out. Do note, though, that boiling water really works best on metal pipes.
  • Plunger your drain. Use a cup plunger to fit on top of your drain, and plunge away! If you don’t have a cup plunger in your home, you could even use an empty milk carton (yep, that’s right!) – simply put the carton over the drain, upside down, and squeeze. This has the same effect as a plunger.
  • Use vinegar. One great way to clean out your clogged drain pipe is to use vinegar on your drain. In addition, there are lots of great resources out there for making your own drain cleaner, by using both baking powder and vinegar.
