Deal With a Clogged ToiletA clogged toilet is bound to happen every once in a while. When your toilet fails to flush, don’t panic – you will most likely be able to unclog it yourself. But if you are not comfortable attempting to fix your toilet yourself, call General Plumbing.

What You Can Do While You Wait for a Professional

Immediately when you become aware that your toilet is not flushing properly, refrain from flushing multiple times. In the case of a clog, flushing again will most likely fill the tank with more water and result in an overflow.

In case an overflow does happen while you’re attempting to fix the problem, place old towels or paper towels on the floor around the toilet to help prevent a potential mess in your bathroom. Use rubber gloves when working on your toilet.

To try and loosen a clogged toilet, you can use a plunger. You should use a heavy-duty rubber plunger that is able to make a tight seal around the opening in your toilet bowl that leads to the pipes. When you apply slow, gentle pressure to the plunger, there is a suction effect that moves water through the pipes. This movement of water can loosen a clog.

If the water in the toilet is able to move down through the pipes, but it seems that a clog is still in place, you may have to manually put water in the toilet bowl and use the plunger again. Repeat this process until the clog has loosened and dissipated.

If the obstruction in your toilet is not due to organic waste – for instance, if an object has fallen in the toilet – you should not use a plunger. If the object is visible or in the first few inches of the drain, you may be able to put on gloves and simply remove it from the toilet. In order to reach a bit further, you could also dismantle a wire coat hanger and use the wire to gently fish the object out of the toilet.
